Connected and Protected Drivers

The connectivity of vehicles suggests multiple advantages for users, but it does also raise challenges that have to be faced. The RACC Foundation has been analysing this innovation linked to mobility. A good example of the mobility of the future was the event held in the facilities of the FCB's Nou Camp, called iMobility Challenge 2014, locally organised by the RACC Foundation on behalf of the FIA, offering the chance to test the latest innovations in information technology applied to mobility, such as the eCall system or the autonomous emergency braking, amongst others.

The emergency call system was analysed in detail by the Foundation. The active participation in the European consortium project called HeERO on the harmonisation or standardisation of the emergency call system on a European level through the common emergency telephone number 112 allowed the Foundation to study the feasibility of a hypothetical E-Call system for motorcycles by means of a survey among users.

The Foundation has been following the debate and the constant novelties, both as regards technology and regulations, of the connected car. The participation in the FIA campaign “My Car, My Data”, which brings to light how important the protection of the data sent by their vehicles is for European drivers, and the active participation in the FIA Task Force on connectivity have been significant targets.

As regards the connected car, the Foundation has also collaborated in the dissemination and testing of Golo, a device that is connected to the vehicle and sends information to the user's mobile phone about the condition and position of the vehicle, allowing to activate messages and to remotely connect with the car workshop in case of a breakdown.
