Safe Motorists

The abilities, mainly the habits, the attitudes and values of people when moving are a key factor for prevention and for the improvement of accident rates. In urban environments, which are becoming increasingly dense and complex, the common use of infrastructures and the responsibility as regards mobility are essential in order to guarantee for a safe and civilised mobility.

The Foundation continues promoting awareness raising campaigns and studies, such as the campaign carried out together with the Barcelona City Council and with the collaboration of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the FIA Foundation, launched in 2014, focussed on the protection of the elderly, one of the most vulnerable groups as regards the accident rate.

In 2015, the Foundation, together with the Barcelona City Council and Clear Channel, launched a campaign to promote the use of helmets when riding a bicycle in the city. The main target was inviting bicycle riders to use this protection element voluntarily, especially among children under 16 years of age. This initiative was framed in the Third UN Global Road Safety Week.

One of the studies that had a significant impact was the report and the recommendations for a safe mobility for pregnant women, presented in October 2015, which was drawn-up based on statistic data and a survey, with the collaboration of CatSalut (Medical Emergencies) and Fundació Faros de Sant Joan de Déu. The reports on the increase of the accident rates compared to the previous year did also raise a lot of interest.

In line with watching over good aptitudes of motorists, it is worth mentioning the collaboration with the association Visión y Vida (Vision and Life) that awarded the RACC for its contribution to the drawing up of studies on the visual health of drivers.

As regards future drivers, the Foundation continued offering educational activities such as Bicivismo (Civility on the Bike), the theatre play Stop, A new Adventure of Ketty’s Super Agents, as well as the RACC Educa and Young People and Driving programmes, all of them with the aim of raising awareness among children and young people about best practices as pedestrians, travellers and drivers.

Two new editions of the Contest “Joves i Conducció" (Young People and Driving) that provide young people with the chance to reflect on topics like sustainable mobility, connected mobility and the values of mobility related to a responsible mobility, as well as the staging of the 22nd Road Safety Forum dealing with traffic pacification and accident rate, were also relevant targets in these two years.
