In 2017 we saw how the road fatalities’ figures rose in Spain, while the same figures increased in Catalonia for the second time in the last three years. This fact confirmed a negative trend that implies a serious warning, telling us that things are not being done well. Moreover, it will be rather difficult to see the road fatalities reduced by 50% in 2020 compared to 2010, making it necessary to reconsider the road safety strategy at a European scale in order to recover the lost momentum. In fact, the debate about mobility has often been eclipsed by other relevant aspects in recent years, such as the improvement of the air quality in cities and the disruptive innovation, both as regards the technological perspective (electric, connected and autonomous vehicle) and the business models (shared mobility).
A promising future in which to enjoy a cleaner, safer and more affordable mobility should not distract us from an existing problem that demands continuous efforts. In this line, the RACC Foundation is convinced that it is possible to recover the lost ground, and in order to prove it, we published our roadmap 20 Measures for 2020, in which we detail the actions that can redirect the road safety policies in a short term to let us talk again about the reduction of the fatality rate and face the road to
Vision Zero.
In 2017 we have also been very active approaching the improvement of the air quality, as well as the central role that has to be played by clean mobility in order to achieve it. As a consequence of the approval of restrictive measures for the owners of older polluting vehicles, both in Barcelona and Madrid, the RACC has defended a catalogue of up to 14 actions that we consider to be essential. These demands should not only allow us to reach the minimum air quality levels required by the European Union, but also give solutions to all those affected by the restrictions who need a (clean) vehicle in order to move, and to those whose daily needs are not satisfied by the public transport offer.
Last but not least, in 2017 we continued with our commitment to raise the awareness of citizens as regards a more sustainable mobility, and we were able to help 6,000 children to get information in this field, in addition to informing all citizens of the metropolitan area of Barcelona about our campaign dealing with the co-existence of transport modes.
We will continue to spread this renewed and firm commitment during 2018, for a safe, clean and affordable mobility for all.
